Lok Sabha Speaker Birla rules fresh CEC impeachment motion will be examined per parliamentary procedures
· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated on Thursday that any fresh impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar would be examined strictly according to parliamentary rules and procedures. This comes as opposition parties intensify protests demanding Kumar's removal over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The opposition has previously moved two impeachment notices, both rejected in the first attempt and the second still pending in the Rajya Sabha. Birla's remarks came during a press conference responding to questions about the possibility of a third motion. Under constitutional provisions and the CEC (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the CEC can only be removed through a parliamentary process similar to that for Supreme Court judges.
Why it matters
The development directly impacts the opposition's ability to remove the top election authority, which could affect the integrity of electoral roll revisions ahead of upcoming polls. If a fresh motion is admitted, a three-member committee comprising the CJI or a Supreme Court judge, a high court chief justice, and a distinguished jurist would investigate the charges.
