Longest truce of Ukraine war ends in Kherson
· World · Hindustan Times, Al Jazeera, AFP
Ukraine's longest truce in the war, limited to eastern Kherson, ended on Sunday after Russia declined an extension offer, officials confirmed. The pause, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump and in effect from October 27 to November 1, allowed a humanitarian mission to the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets called it the biggest de-escalation since 2022 and an important step for joint humanitarian efforts. A Ukrainian military officer warned fighting could be worse when it resumes, noting Russian forces used the calm to amass troops and collect intelligence. Kherson residents, including gardener Volodymyr Omeltchenko, described the ceasefire as a breath of fresh air while regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin urged vigilance.
Why it matters
Kherson residents and humanitarian workers gained a rare window for essential tasks and relief, but the truce's end raises risks of intensified violence and civilian harm.
