Luxury Cruise Ship Stranded in Cambodia After Operator Runs Out of Money
· World · CBS News, India Today, Hindustan Times
More than 200 passengers, predominantly Americans, are stranded in Cambodia after luxury cruise operator Villa Vie Residences suspended operations due to soaring fuel costs. CEO Mikael Petterson stated that monthly fuel expenses for the MV Odyssey surged from $400,000 to $2 million following the outbreak of the war with Iran. The vessel, which launched in October 2024 for a 15-year continuous around-the-world journey, saw per-ton fuel prices jump from $700 to between $2,000 and $3,000. Company leadership attempted to absorb the rising costs by slowing the itinerary before reaching a financial breaking point. Villa Vie Residences now plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leaving residential passengers scrambling to pack and depart.
Why it matters
