Madhya Pradesh Releases Two Cheetahs Into Tiger Reserve
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav released two cheetahs, Vyom and Neera, from Kuno National Park into the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve in Sagar district on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. This marks the first introduction of cheetahs into the reserve, which spans 2,300 sq km and hosts around 30 tigers and 40 leopards. Five soft release bomas have been prepared in the Muhali range for the cheetahs to adjust gradually, with security and monitoring arranged over 439 hectares. The chief minister stated cheetahs live peacefully without human conflict and announced plans to bring two more cheetahs next month to expand the population. African cheetahs were first translocated to India in September 2022, with individuals from Namibia, South Africa, and Botswana. Experts note the co-existence with tigers and leopards will be a significant experience for the African cheetahs.
Why it matters
Cheetah conservation efforts in Madhya Pradesh advance as the state integrates the species into an existing tiger reserve, testing inter-species co-existence. Success could influence future wildlife relocation strategies across India’s protected areas.
