Madras HC Rules Non-Hindus Must Affirm Faith Before Entering Agamic Temples

· India · Hindustan Times, Times of India

The Madras High Court clarified that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay was only asked to affirm his faith in the presiding deity and not convert to Hinduism before entering the Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai. A bench of Justices GR Swaminathan and P Murugan ruled that non-Hindus seeking to enter Agamic temples in the state must submit a written undertaking declaring their faith and agreeing to follow temple customs. Vijay signed the declaration register at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple in September before proceeding beyond the flagstaff to offer prayers, following a similar procedure at the Tiruchendur Murugan temple in April. The court issued the clarification while hearing a public interest litigation filed by Madurai resident Thangam Venkatesh seeking enforcement of temple-entry rules.

Why it matters

The ruling establishes clear legal guidelines for non-Hindu visitors entering Agamic temples across Tamil Nadu, affecting temple administration protocols and religious entry procedures.
