An earthquake of magnitude 5 struck Tibet on Thursday at a depth of 10 km, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The tremor occurred as rescue and recovery operations continued following catastrophic flooding near the Gyirong border crossing with Nepal. China fully reopened the only road leading to the Gyirong crossing on Wednesday after sections of the G216 national highway were washed away. The official death toll from the flooding rose to 21, while 541 people remained missing, including 104 Nepali citizens, 49 Indians, 33 Latvians, and six Canadians. Rescue efforts have been hampered by persistent rain, unstable cliffs, and fast-flowing rivers in the narrow mountain gorge.
