Maharashtra EC Directs BLOs to Tell Voters Not to Attend SIR Hearings

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu, Hindustan Times

Following the Election Commission of India's September 26 decision, the Maharashtra Election Commission instructed Booth Level Officers to inform residents who received SIR notices not to appear for hearings. In a virtual meeting on Tuesday, state election officers were told to visit voters' homes instead of calling them for hearings, as per ECI's directive. Joint Chief Electoral Officer Manohar Parkar issued a letter reiterating that notices should state 'No need to be present for the hearing'. The third phase of SIR is ongoing in Maharashtra, with Pune district alone generating notices for 13,32,845 residents due to discrepancies with the 2002 voter roll.

Why it matters

Millions of voters in Maharashtra avoid unnecessary travel and confusion as EC streamlines the SIR process to house visits. The change aims to reduce administrative burdens on both officials and residents during electoral roll updates.
