Maharashtra Faces Severe Drought as 20 Districts Record Deficient Rainfall

The Maharashtra government declared drought in 265 of the State's 358 talukas after the India Meteorological Department reported deficient rainfall across 20 of 36 districts. The water deficit disrupted traditional practices, forcing civic authorities in Dharashiv district's Kalamb town to use artificial water tanks and residual quarry water for Ganesh idol immersions. Reservoir levels have dropped sharply, with Marathwada dams at 46% capacity compared to 81% last year and Amravati division dams down to 64%. Divisional Commissioner G. Sreekanth urged mandals to adopt symbolic or alternative immersion methods, though tradition-bound communities resisted the appeal.
