Maharashtra Mandates Marathi Proficiency for Taxi and Auto Drivers

The Maharashtra government has implemented a new rule requiring auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers to possess functional knowledge of the Marathi language. Under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle (Third Amendment) Rules, 2026, notified on August 12, drivers who fail to demonstrate language proficiency face potential suspension of their driving licences and Public Service Vehicle badges for up to three months. Repeat violations may result in the permanent cancellation of these licences. The state transport department justifies the mandate by stating that drivers must be able to communicate with passengers and understand basic instructions in the local language. This requirement now extends to app-based cab drivers and vehicle permit holders, following an earlier deadline extension from May 1 to August 15.
