Maharashtra to Penalize Taxi and Auto Drivers Lacking Marathi Proficiency

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that authorities will begin a drive on August 20, 2026, to enforce Marathi language requirements for commercial passenger drivers. The initiative targets auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers who lack a working knowledge of the state language. Officials will first issue notices to non-compliant drivers, followed by a three-month period to acquire the necessary proficiency. If drivers fail to comply within this timeframe, their licenses and badges face potential suspension or cancellation. Additional Transport Commissioner Ravi Gaikwad will lead the month-long enforcement operation, which includes video recording of the verification process across the state.
