· Entertainment · Hindustan Times, Indian Express, Live Law
The Supreme Court in New Delhi told actor Rajpal Yadav to make a good movie and entertain people again to rebuild his image, taking note of a Rs 1.15 crore payment made in a long-running cheque-bounce case. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana noted the payment during a hearing on Tuesday. Yadav's counsel informed the court that a prospective buyer has been found who is willing to deposit Rs 85 lakh by demand draft in the Registry by October 12. Yadav submitted that he suffered financial losses amounting to Rs 200 crore to Rs 250 crore over the last 13 years, specifically citing losses from his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata. The legal dispute stems from a 2010 financial agreement where Yadav received Rs 5 crore from M/s Murli Projects Pvt Ltd, leading to dishonoured cheques in 2013.
Why it matters
The Supreme Court's remarks highlight the ongoing legal and financial battles faced by veteran actors, while setting clear expectations for financial settlement in long-pending commercial disputes.
