Man City agree £125m for Chelsea's Fernandez
· Sports · BBC Sport, ESPN
Manchester City have agreed a joint-British transfer record fee of £125m with Chelsea for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The clubs finalised negotiations over the past 24 hours, and Fernandez will now undergo a medical before signing a long-term deal at the Etihad Stadium. Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a then-British record £107m, and his latest switch matches the £125m Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak a year ago. He was omitted from Chelsea's recent squad for their 4-3 Premier League win over Brighton and 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Luton, with reports from Argentina suggesting he asked to be left out. City manager Enzo Maresca, who worked with Fernandez at Chelsea, pushed for the move after losing four midfielders this summer, including Rodri to Barcelona and Tijjani Reijnders to Al-Qadsiah.
Why it matters
Fernandez becomes the fourth player to move to a Premier League club for £100m or more this summer, reshaping City's midfield after major departures and continuing Chelsea's aggressive buy-and-sell model.
