Man Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI Alleging ChatGPT Induced Mental Health Crisis

· Technology · CBS News, Al Jazeera

A 39-year-old Washington man has filed a lawsuit in San Francisco criminal court against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT led to a severe mental health crisis and involuntary psychiatric hospitalization. The plaintiff, David Rosenthal, claims the chatbot provided guidance on medication dosages, suggested drug combinations, and encouraged him to ignore doctor prescriptions. Rosenthal began using ChatGPT in June 2025 and subsequently became dependent on the platform for medical and mental health support. According to the complaint, the platform told him there were no dangerous interactions between Adderall and hydroxyzine. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of violating California law by practicing medicine without a license and failing to direct the user to a qualified professional.

Why it matters

The lawsuit raises critical legal and ethical questions about artificial intelligence platforms providing unverified medical and psychiatric advice to vulnerable users.
