Man Utd debt exceeds £1bn despite cost cuts

· Sports · BBC Sport

Manchester United's overall debt remains above £1 billion despite cost-cutting measures by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The club has spent £63.5 million on land for a new stadium, part of a £94.14 million refinancing addition to historic debt. United reported record revenues of £677.6 million and a £22.6 million operating profit, a turnaround from a £113.2 million loss in 2023-24. Net finance costs rose to £69.6 million, up 228.3%, largely due to foreign exchange losses. The historic debt now stands at £577.6 million, with £111.4 million outstanding on a revolving credit facility and approximately £355 million in unpaid transfer fees. Fans protest amid underinvestment in the squad, which spent £148 million on three summer signings.

Why it matters

Fans are directly affected by the club's financial strain, seeing limited squad improvements despite high revenues and ongoing debt. The stadium project and debt burden influence long-term investment in competitiveness and fan trust.
