Manchester City's Defensive Woes Highlighted by Aston Villa Defeat
· Sports · BBC Sport, Sportstar
Manchester City's 100% winning start to the Premier League season ended with a defeat against Aston Villa at Villa Park, exposing defensive vulnerabilities for manager Enzo Maresca. Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa, leaving City with only one clean sheet in their past six matches across all competitions. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Marc Guehi have drawn scrutiny, having made three errors each leading to league goals since the start of last season. Maresca acknowledged that both goals conceded against Villa were avoidable and stressed the need for his team to be more clinical. City remain in the top two of the standings but must tighten their backline to mount a realistic title challenge.
Why it matters
Manchester City's defensive vulnerabilities threaten their Premier League title ambitions and place pressure on manager Enzo Maresca to address recurring errors from key players.
