Manchester United's Gabriel Dreams of Ballon d'Or Amid Real Madrid Move
· Sports · BBC Sport
Manchester United forward JJ Gabriel, 16, has expressed his dream to win the Ballon d'Or as he nears a move to Real Madrid. Gabriel has been training alone in Spain after leaving United and has a verbal agreement to join Real Madrid, though no deal has been signed yet. United is due compensation if Gabriel leaves, with the figure being lower if he signs for a non-Premier League club. Despite United holding his domestic registration, his new EU passport through his Cypriot mother is not expected to prevent him from joining an overseas club. Gabriel was named the Premier League's Under-18 player of the season last term, having scored a hat-trick for United in the UEFA Youth League in September.
Why it matters
This move could see a highly-rated young talent transfer from a major English club to a Spanish giant, impacting both clubs' youth development strategies and future squad compositions. It also highlights the complexities of international transfers for underage players with dual nationality.
