Manipur Cannot Achieve Lasting Peace Without Ending Gun Culture: CM

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh stated that the state cannot achieve lasting peace as long as gun culture persists, and appealed to residents to surrender illegal arms. Mr. Singh made these remarks during a visit to Sinai Camp, a designated camp for militants under the Suspension of Operations agreement in Kangpokpi district. The camp was recently taken over by the CRPF following joint operations with the CoBRA unit and state police after the killing of three firewood collectors in Imphal East district. During the operation, security forces found 17 individuals impersonating SoO cadres using false identities at the facility. The visit marked the first time a sitting chief minister toured a designated SoO camp.

Why it matters

The takeover of the militant camp and the Chief Minister's direct appeal highlight ongoing security challenges and state efforts to disarm armed factions in Manipur.
