Manipur Death Toll Rises to Nine Amid Fresh Clashes
· India · The Hindu, NDTV
The death toll in a fresh round of clashes between Kuki and Naga armed groups in Manipur has risen to nine as tension remains high across several hill districts. The violence began after a 22-year-old woman was shot dead in Chassad village located in the Kamjong district on October 9, 2026. This killing triggered an exchange of fire that spread across Kamjong, Ukhrul, and Kangpokpi districts, resulting in additional casualties and torched properties. Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh appealed for peace and restraint while instructing authorities to deploy additional security forces to the worst-hit areas. Prohibitory orders under Section 162 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita have been imposed in the affected villages to prevent further escalation.
Why it matters
The renewed ethnic violence in Manipur threatens regional stability and tests the administration's ability to maintain law enforcement and protect civilians in sensitive hill districts.
