Manipur Ethnic Violence Death Toll Reaches 306 Since May 2023
· India · Times of India, The Hindu
Ethnic violence in Manipur has resulted in 306 deaths and 49 missing persons as of August 31, 2026, according to state home minister Govindas Konthoujam. The figures were disclosed in the state Assembly in response to a query from BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh. The conflict began on May 3, 2023, following a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts protesting the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The state previously underwent a period of President's Rule from February 2025 until February 2026, when a new government led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh was formed.
Why it matters
The official death toll provides a grim assessment of the long-standing ethnic conflict in Manipur, which has caused significant displacement and political instability in the state.
