Manipur Government Seeks Census Postponement Until NRC Completion
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
The Manipur government is sending a delegation to Delhi to request that the central government delay the upcoming Census in the state. Officials intend to press for the completion of a National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census begins, citing concerns over demographic imbalances. This demand follows a two-day shutdown called by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, which disrupted public transport, schools, and markets across the Imphal Valley. The Manipur assembly previously passed a unanimous resolution in 2022 and reaffirmed it in 2024 seeking an NRC to identify undocumented migrants. Ethnic violence in the state has resulted in at least 260 deaths and 60,000 displacements since 2023.
Why it matters
The demand for an NRC remains a central point of contention in Manipur's ongoing ethnic conflict, significantly influencing state-level policy and public stability.
