· India · The Hindu, News18, Zee News
A musician from Manipur, Chongtham Vikram Singh, died in Delhi after being assaulted by a group of seven men and a 15-year-old boy in Ashram area on Sunday night. The Delhi Police registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for mob lynching, identifying the accused as food delivery workers aged between 15 and 36. The victim’s son, Yaiphaba, reported that the attack followed prior threats after Singh complained about excessive noise from a nearby dhaba. Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the incident, urging swift justice. Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the assault and have taken legal action as per law.
Why it matters
The incident highlights the persistent threat of mob violence in urban areas, particularly against marginalised communities like musicians, and underscores the need for stronger legal protections and community awareness. The case also raises concerns about the safety of artists and cultural workers in cities like Delhi, where such attacks can deter creative expression.
