Manipur Naga body gives 48-hour ultimatum to return severed head

· India · Times of India, Indian Express

The Joint Tribes Council Manipur has issued a 48-hour non-negotiable ultimatum demanding the return of the severed head of 52-year-old Ajinbou R, whose headless body was found in Kangpokpi district after a suspected militant attack. A video appeared showing Ajinbou’s head among heavily armed camouflaged militants. The council stated that no post-mortem will be conducted until the head is returned for a dignified burial and warned of “the most stringent measures” if it is not returned. At least nine people were killed in separate firing incidents in Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts on Friday and Saturday, continuing the violence between Kuki and Naga groups that has left more than 50 dead since February. Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh condemned the killings and ordered authorities to restore peace and ensure citizen safety. The council held the state and central governments directly responsible for the renewed violence.

Why it matters

The unresolved killing of Ajinbou R and the missing severed head are inflaming ethnic tensions between Kuki and Naga communities in Manipur, where more than 50 people have died since February, deepening a cycle of retaliatory violence and making peace even harder to achieve.
