Manipur Shuts Educational Institutions Amid Census and NRC Protests

The Manipur government has ordered the closure of all schools, colleges, and universities across the state from August 20 to 23 due to prevailing law and order issues. The shutdown coincides with a 48-hour strike called by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, a Meitei group demanding that the national Census be conducted only after updating the NRC. Meitei groups seek to identify undocumented migrants who arrived in Manipur after 1951, while Kuki organizations accuse them of targeting their communities. In response to the protests, the Lilong Sub-Divisional Officer cancelled appointments for census supervisors, enumerators, and field trainers.
