Manipur to Form Committee of 36 Communities for Peace

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced plans to form a committee representing all 36 communities in the state to promote peace and inclusive development. Speaking in Imphal during the Mera Hou Chongba Festival 2026, the Chief Minister said the proposal follows a query from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on whether such a unity initiative existed. Mr. Khemchand Singh noted that people from hill areas, including some who previously avoided Imphal, participated in the festival this year. The event included the inauguration of the Hill Chiefs Guest House at the Palace Compound to strengthen ties between the hills and the valley. The exact timeline for the formation of the committee has not been finalized.

Why it matters

The proposed committee attempts to bridge long-standing ethnic divides between the hill tribes and the valley residents in strife-hit Manipur. Its success will directly determine whether dialogue can replace ongoing civil unrest in the state.
