Marriage Not Licence to Control Wife's Autonomy: Karnataka High Court

The Karnataka High Court has observed that marriage cannot be used to control a woman's choices, freedom, or individuality. Justice Dr Chillakur Sumalatha made the remarks while dismissing a petition filed by a Bengaluru man challenging a family court order to pay Rs 9,000 monthly maintenance to his wife. The court noted that household work and caring for in-laws should be voluntary, while parents' care remains the responsibility of their own children. The man had argued that his wife left the matrimonial home voluntarily and failed to look after his parents or do household chores. Dismissing the petition, the court questioned why an Indian woman must seek permission from her husband or in-laws to visit her parents.
