Mathematics Group Urges Researchers to Reject OpenAI Over AI-Generated Math Work
· Technology · Indian Express, NDTV, Bloomberg
The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) has criticised OpenAI over its approach to mathematical research and urged researchers not to work for the AI company. The criticism followed OpenAI's release of 722 manuscripts spanning 372 groups of results from its internal frontier AI model, which the company claimed included solutions to or significant progress on hundreds of open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science. AHM accused OpenAI of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution, stating the company showed 'total disregard for the norms of scientific research' by overlooking an advisory group's position that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. OpenAI said it consulted an independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI) at the Institute for Advanced Study to develop best practices for sharing AI-generated mathematical results. The controversy followed earlier
Why it matters
The dispute highlights growing tensions in the mathematics community over the role of AI in research and concerns about intellectual property, verification, and academic integrity. It could influence how researchers engage with AI companies and shape norms around the use of AI-generated content in formal mathematical publications.
