Mayawati Removes Nephew Akash Anand From Key BSP Post
· India · Hindustan Times, News18, Indian Express
BSP chief Mayawati on Thursday removed her nephew Akash Anand from the post of chief national coordinator, saying he needs more time to gain political "maturity" before being entrusted with major responsibilities. Addressing a meeting of the party's national committee at the BSP's state unit office in Lucknow, Mayawati said she had allowed Anand to continue working within the party but it would be inappropriate to give him major responsibilities at this stage. The decision marks a setback for Anand, whom Mayawati had elevated to national convenor in August 2025, effectively placing him second in the party hierarchy and signalling his emergence as her political successor. Mayawati cited concerns about opponents using "conciliation, bribery, punishment, and division" to undermine the party in elections.
Why it matters
The reversal effectively derails Mayawati's own succession plan for the BSP, weakening the party's already limited electoral machinery in Uttar Pradesh and leaving a leadership vacuum at a time when Dalit voters are being actively courted by BJP, SP and INC ahead of upcoming state and national polls.
