Meghalaya Advocate General Amit Kumar stated that bar associations have no legal power to remove him from his constitutional post after the Meghalaya High Court Bar Association and Shillong Bar Association expelled him from their rolls. The bar associations unanimously condemned Kumar for making a generalized statement before a high court bench on August 3 asserting that the bar had failed to protect a female intern who was molested by a senior bar member on July 28. Kumar defended his statement, maintaining that it is his duty as a senior advocate to address institutional failures rather than maintain a holier-than-thou attitude. He noted that he was not issued any notice or given an opportunity to be heard before his name was removed from the rolls. Kumar emphasized that his appointment is the prerogative of the Chief Minister and the state government.
