Meghalaya High Court Directs State to Shift Foreign Nationals to Detention Centre

The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to transfer all foreign nationals who have completed their prison sentences to a temporary detention centre by September 28. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh issued the order in Shillong while hearing a petition concerning foreign detainees. According to a state status report, around 30 foreign nationals remain in custody despite completing their terms. The government has identified the MBOSE Hostel at Laitumkhrah in Shillong as a temporary holding facility with a capacity of 60 beds. The court also sought details from the state and the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer on compensation modalities for those held past their release dates.
