Meghalaya High Court Issues Contempt Notices Over Lawyers' Boycott

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

The Meghalaya High Court has issued contempt notices to bar association office-bearers following a statewide boycott of judicial work. The protest was called to demand the removal of Advocate General Amit Kumar, a move the court declared completely illegal. Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice H S Thangkhiew stated that courts cannot be used as a tool to achieve such objectives. The boycott, which began on October 1, has disrupted judicial operations across the state, with the exception of Baghmara. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on October 13.

Why it matters

The court's intervention aims to restore judicial access for litigants who have been left without legal representation due to the ongoing protest.
