Meghalaya United Democratic Party Loses Eight MLAs to BJP in Merger
· India · Indian Express, NDTV
The United Democratic Party in Meghalaya has been reduced from 12 legislators to a single member after eight rebel MLAs merged with the BJP and three others moved to join the National People's Party. Speaker Thomas A Sangma approved the merger of the eight legislators with the BJP, which is a partner in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Defecting MLA Kyrmen Shylla stated that aligning with the ruling national party was necessary to address key state demands, including clearance for small-scale coal mining and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. The UDP leadership has expelled the three legislators seeking to join the NPP.
Why it matters
The mass defection significantly shifts the political balance within Meghalaya's ruling coalition, strengthening the BJP's legislative footprint in the state.
