Melania Trump Announces Truce in Oleshky Amid Ukraine War
· World · BBC News, NDTV
A ceasefire has begun in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, a week after US First Lady Melania Trump announced the truce. Russia's defence ministry stopped firing toward Kherson across the Dnipro River at 04:00 Moscow time to prepare for a humanitarian operation. Ukraine's human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets confirmed the Ukrainian side is honouring its commitments to the ceasefire. Oleshky, home to 24,000 people before the war, now has an estimated 6,000 residents including 200 children desperate for food and supplies.
Why it matters
The truce allows much-needed aid deliveries and civilian evacuations in Oleshky, directly alleviating the humanitarian crisis for the thousands of residents trapped between front lines since Russia's 2022 invasion.
