Merz Warns EU Anti-China Trade Measures Must Not Erode Competitive Edge
· World · Bloomberg, Forex Factory
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz cautioned that policies under discussion to protect the European Union from unfair Chinese trade practices should not undermine the bloc's own competitiveness. Speaking at a Berlin industry conference, Merz said the EU must avoid measures that raise costs for European companies or invite retaliation that hurts exports. The remarks come as the European Commission weighs new anti-subsidy tools and tighter investment screening aimed at Beijing. Merz stressed that Europe's strength lies in open markets and innovation, not protectionism. He did not specify which proposals he considers excessive. The Commission has not yet presented final legislation.
Why it matters
EU trade policy directly shapes market access for Indian exporters and investment flows into Europe, while any escalation with China could disrupt global supply chains that Indian manufacturers rely on.
