Meta Agrees To Restrict Teen Access In State Settlement

· Technology · TechCrunch, Android Authority, Bloomberg

Meta has agreed to implement sweeping changes to its Facebook and Instagram platforms to restrict access for users under 18 as part of an $18 billion settlement with 29 U.S. states. The new protections include a daily two-hour time limit, a default Night Mode block between midnight and 6 a.m., and the ability for parents to set a non-personalized feed as the default experience. Teens will also receive usage prompts every 15 minutes, and notifications will be muted during school hours. These measures are required to remain in place for 10 years, pending final judicial approval.

Why it matters

The settlement forces one of the world's largest social media companies to fundamentally alter its product design to address concerns regarding the impact of its platforms on adolescent mental health.
