· Technology · TechCrunch, Economic Times, Exchange4Media
Sandhya Devanathan, Meta's vice president for India and Southeast Asia, is stepping down to join OpenAI. Based in Singapore, she will report to OpenAI's Asia-Pacific managing director, Kiran Mani, and oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, and regulatory operations. Her departure follows over a decade at Meta, during which she held various leadership roles including head of the company's Asia-Pacific gaming business. Meta's India managing director, Arun Srinivas, will now report directly to Benjamin Joe, the company's vice president for Asia-Pacific. The move comes as Meta faces increased regulatory scrutiny in India regarding online safety, content moderation, and child sexual abuse material on its platforms.
Why it matters
The leadership change occurs as Meta navigates heightened pressure from the Indian government over content safety, while OpenAI continues to aggressively expand its operational footprint across the Asia-Pacific region.
