Meta Muse AI Agent Targets Subscription Economy

· Technology · CNBC, TechCrunch

Meta's Muse AI personal assistant, rolled out this month, is helping consumers identify and cancel recurring subscriptions — a direct assault on the subscription economy's most profitable habit: consumer inertia. Americans now average about $157 a month, or $1,887 annually, across roughly 20 subscriptions, with 44% increasing their spend in 2025. Stanford economist Neale Mahoney's research found consumers are about four times more likely to cancel when forced to decide, and his team estimates sellers can roughly double revenue by exploiting that inertia. Bank of America data shows subscription spend rose 7.7% year-over-year in July, faster than overall card spending, with entertainment and retail making up about 43% of the total. By folding subscription management into a broader AI agent, Muse makes forgotten charges far easier to surface than standalone cancel services that have existed for years.

Why it matters

Consumers across the US stand to reclaim billions in dormant subscription charges, while streaming, app and retail subscription businesses face a structural threat to the revenue model built on forgotten sign-ups.
