Meta has reached a settlement with 48 US states and four jurisdictions to implement stricter safety measures for teen users on Facebook and Instagram. The agreement mandates age verification, limits on notifications, and restricted screentime for minors. Meta has committed to paying $18 billion to fund online safety initiatives, with $5.3 billion of that total contingent on competitors like TikTok and YouTube adopting similar product changes. If these rival platforms agree to the terms, the restrictions will become more severe, including a 60-minute daily screentime cap and a nighttime usage block from 10PM to 7AM. A judge is expected to approve the proposed settlement following a hearing held on Wednesday.
