Meta US Settlement Raises Global Questions Over Tech Accountability

Meta agreed to settle a lawsuit with 29 US states by paying USD 18 billion and altering platform features to restrict nighttime usage and set time limits for minors on Facebook and Instagram. The US states had originally sought USD 200 billion in a case arguing the company designed addictive products targeting young users. Elsewhere, pending legal actions continue in jurisdictions including Kenya and the Netherlands. In one such case, Abrham Meareg sued Meta in Kenya after his father was killed in Ethiopia in 2021 following posts promoted by Facebook's algorithm.
