MHA Directed State Police To Detain Protesters And Check Funding Ahead Of Delhi Rally

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu, New York Times

The Union Home Ministry instructed state DGPs and police commissioners to issue notices, carry out preventive detentions, and check funding sources of potential demonstrators ahead of the CJP protest in New Delhi. The directives were issued during an October 4 meeting and reviewed in a follow-up meeting on October 8. Security establishments acted out of concern that earlier protests, which led to Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation in July, gained momentum because crowd strength was underestimated. In Maharashtra, the home state of CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, the DGP's office issued confidential letters to local police units, leading to over 200 detentions in Mumbai on Friday. The Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson did not respond to queries regarding the meetings.
