Michelle Bachelet Withdraws From UN Secretary-General Race Following Low Poll Support

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has withdrawn from the race to become the next UN secretary-general, ending her bid to become the first woman to lead the world body. Bachelet announced her decision in an Instagram video after receiving just one encouraging vote in the UN Security Council's third informal straw poll on Friday. Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan led the latest poll with nine encouraging votes, followed by Guyana's Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett with eight. Other remaining candidates include Rafael Grossi, Macky Sall, and Maria Fernanda Espinosa. The eventual successor will take over from current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres when his term concludes on December 31.
