Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated on Thursday that artificial intelligence has fundamentally transformed the memory chip business, shifting it away from traditional boom-and-bust cycles. Speaking on CNBC, Mehrotra emphasized that AI systems require significantly more, higher-performance, and lower-power memory. The remarks coincided with construction on a massive semiconductor fabrication site near Micron's headquarters in Boise, Idaho, part of a planned USD 250 billion U.S. investment. The Boise site will feature two fabs the size of ten football fields each, with wafer production expected to begin in mid-2027. Mehrotra noted that memory is now deeply integrated into system design from the earliest development stages, serving as strategic infrastructure for the AI era.
