An investigation by The Guardian has revealed a discrepancy between Microsoft's public statements regarding its artificial intelligence capacity and the number of advanced chips it currently has in operation. Internal documents show Microsoft has 2.2 million AI chips installed globally nearly two years into a $280 billion expansion, falling short of its target of 1.8 million chips by the end of 2024 as estimated by some experts. The findings suggest that Microsoft's newly built datacentres may either lack full operational status or operate without necessary hardware. Nvidia manufactures the chips that power AI models, but the company maintains strict secrecy regarding sales figures and client identities. Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella stated last year that the firm plans to double its global datacentre footprint by mid-2027.
