Microsoft Offers Voluntary Exit Packages to Quarter of Global Workforce

· Technology · Ars Technica, Deadline

Microsoft has announced it will offer voluntary exit packages to approximately 60,000 employees, representing about a quarter of its global workforce. The voluntary exit offer is being extended to qualifying employees at level 70 or below in the United States, India, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman stated that eligible organizations were selected based on business priorities, customer commitments, and workforce needs. The move follows several years of managing costs alongside heavy investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centers. The company previously ran a voluntary retirement program in April for 8,750 US employees and carried out layoffs in its Xbox division in July.

Why it matters

The buyout offer affects tens of thousands of corporate employees globally, including teams in India, as tech giants restructure their cost structures and workforce models around artificial intelligence investments.
