Microsoft Prices Surface RTX Spark Dev Box at $6,000
· Technology · Engadget, Economic Times
Microsoft has opened preorders for its developer-focused Surface RTX Spark Dev Box desktop computer, priced at $6,000. Customer shipments are scheduled to begin in November following the device's initial announcement in June. The desktop is built with NVIDIA's RTX Spark N1X chip, 128GB of unified memory, and 2TB of removable storage to support local artificial intelligence workflows. The system runs Windows 11 Pro and comes pre-installed with developer tools including Visual Studio Code, Git, and GitHub Copilot. While the hardware can run AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters, the high price tag makes it primarily targeted at enterprise customers.
Why it matters
The high price of specialized developer hardware underscores the steep cost barrier for engineers building local artificial intelligence applications.
