Microsoft To Deploy One Million Custom Maia 300 AI Chips
· Technology · Economic Times, Reuters, Bloomberg
Microsoft announced plans to deploy over a million of its custom-designed Maia 300 AI chips next year to support its internal AI services and Azure cloud computing platform. The Maia 300 is the company's third-generation custom processor, built using 2-nanometer technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Microsoft designed the chip using a "chiplet" architecture, which the company states provides 40% more useful computing power than Nvidia's GB300 server racks. This move is intended to reduce reliance on Nvidia's dominant hardware in the AI computing market.
Why it matters
By developing its own high-performance silicon, Microsoft aims to lower operational costs and reduce dependency on external suppliers for the massive computing power required by its AI models.
