Microsoft Unveils Feature to Create Digital Copies of Physical Xbox Games

Microsoft has announced a new digitization feature allowing Xbox Insiders to create digital copies of their physical game discs starting August 31. The program supports thousands of titles, including most disc-based Xbox One and Series X games, though original Xbox and Xbox 360 games are excluded at launch. Players must insert a supported disc into their console to claim a digital entitlement, which grants access to features like Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming while the physical disc remains fully functional. The physical disc is bonded to the digital license to prevent users from installing the game and passing the disc to someone else without a purchase. The initiative provides physical game owners a way to build digital libraries ahead of future consoles that may lack disc drives.
