Migrant Worker Dies From Toxic Gas Inhalation on Fishing Boat in Kozhikode

· India · The Hindu, NDTV

A migrant worker undergoing treatment after inhaling toxic gas inside the storeroom of a fishing boat at Beypore harbour in Kozhikode died on Sunday. The deceased, Sachin Das, was a native of West Bengal and was employed on the fishing boat Tesla alongside another worker, Dilip Sur, who also died following the incident. The incident occurred on October 9, 2026, when the workers were collecting stock from the storeroom and lost consciousness due to a suspected lack of fresh air inside the enclosed space. Fire and Rescue Services personnel coordinated the rescue operation and warned fishers to stay alert, particularly while employing unskilled migrant workers. This incident follows a similar tragedy on April 18, 2026, when two other fishermen from West Bengal died while carrying out emergency repair work inside a boat off Beypore harbour.

Why it matters

The repeated fatalities highlight severe safety lapses and ventilation hazards in enclosed fishing boat storerooms operating along Kerala's harbours, raising urgent concerns for migrant labour safety.
