Milkman Father Follows Daughter Ankita Bhakat's Asian Games History on Phone
· Sports · Indian Express, Times of India
Shantanu Bhakat was delivering milk packets to about 100 houses in Kolkata's Khatipura neighbourhood on Friday morning when his daughter Ankita Bhakat won historic gold at the Asian Games in Japan. Ankita, alongside Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod, defeated South Korea 5-2 in the women's team recurve archery final at Okazaki Central Park Multipurpose Square. The victory marked India's first ever gold medal in the complex recurve bow event at the Asian Games, overcoming a South Korean lineup that included Olympic champions. Despite his daughter telling him her prize money would cover family expenses, Shantanu continued his 4 a.m. milk delivery rounds. Shantanu previously borrowed money from his four brothers to fund Ankita's early training and local competitions before she joined the Tata Archery Academy in 2014.
Why it matters
The victory breaks South Korea's long-standing dominance in team recurve archery and marks a historic milestone for Indian sport.
