Millwall Manager Criticised Over Comments On Racial Abuse Stoppage

· Sports · BBC Sport

Anti-racism campaign group Kick It Out has criticised Millwall manager Alex Neil for his remarks following the halting of their Championship match against Swansea City. Tuesday's fixture at The Den was paused for seven minutes during the second half after discriminatory chants were directed at Swansea substitute Ji-sung Eom. The Metropolitan Police is investigating the incident, while referee Edward Duckworth followed protocols by speaking with coaches and the safety officer. Neil told BBC Radio London that stopping the match did not deal with the issue and only killed the momentum of the game, adding that he wanted play to restart. Kick It Out stated that player welfare must always take precedence over the flow of a match, and that leaders must set the right tone.

Why it matters

The incident highlights ongoing debates within professional football over protocols for addressing racial abuse and whether match stoppages disrupt sporting flow at the expense of player welfare.
