In New Delhi, Mathur recalled that her MTV contract was not renewed after five years with the network when she became pregnant with her first child, Vivaan. She was told by the channel that VJs are never pregnant, a decision she chose not to fight because of her self-respect. Years later, she was asked to step aside from hosting Indian Idol because producers believed Indian audiences would not accept a pregnant host. Mathur expressed frustration that her professional value built over years was dismissed because of pregnancy.
